We would like to start this final distribution week of Weekly Greens CSA with an enormous THANK YOU to all of you for believing and supporting us through this first year. Thank you also to our partner distribution sites at VibeWell and Essence on Main who have opened their businesses to promotional events and share pickups this season. We are all looking forward to having some time to evaluate this season and improve on both what we did well this year and on some challenges that we had as well. This season was wet and cold early, dry and hot in the later summer, and as unique as every year we get to enjoy being farmers, even when those years are challenging years.

Frost finally came to our farms this week, and while it's is always bittersweet to see the warm season crops reach their end, the frost also helps sweeten-up the fall crops that can stand a light frost and come out just fine. We have been patiently watching (AND WEEDING) carrots since early August and they are finally here! They are tender, crisp, teenager-sized, and frost-kissed. The kale, arugula, baby romaine, and turnips were lightly frosted this week too so are sweeter tasting than they were just last week. Tomatoes may be done but the peppers are still doing well and some may even find their way into the final box of the season next week. We have been eating potatoes like mad these last few weeks and can't get enough of them simply boiled and topped with butter or olive oil and mixed herbs.
We are wrapping up the inaugural season of Weekly Greens CSA next week with our final fall share. We can feel the days slowing on our farms (which doesn't mean there aren't still long lists of things that have to get done), and the plantings are nearing an end with garlic starting to go in the ground and carrots and other root crops just a few weeks away from a final harvest to go into our coolers for the winter. Almost all of our hoophouses are planted out and filled with vibrant green and red leafy crops that will be harvested in the upcoming months. It's dark later in the mornings and early in the evenings and we're finding ourselves thinking back on a season that always seems to go too fast while looking forward to new crops, new plans, and new ideas for the 2020 season. We hope you enjoy this week's share and look forward to next week's goodness.
FALL SHARE - WEEK 4 (Oct 10)
Cherry Tomatoes
Beets
Butternut Squash
Yukon Gold Potatoes
Green Buttercrunch Head Lettuce
Carmen Peppers
Escamillo Pepper
Scallions
Green Tomatoes
Garlic
Hot Pepper Mix
This squash parade continues with butternut this week and this is the final curtain call for tomatoes for the season. Enjoy the last sweetness of the cherries and fry up some green tomatoes to send them out in style. The head lettuces and other greens are absolutely loving these warm, sunny days and cool nights. We're continuing to harvest potatoes, beets, and other root crops to get them out of the ground and into the coolers for winter storage before it gets too cold. Watch for some carrots in the next week or two as they continue to grow and sweeten up in this cool weather. We still have 2-3 more weeks of harvesting but the crops in the fields are starting to clear out and the winter cover crops are starting to go in. We seeded the first rye of the season today. It will overwinter as a small seedling and then grow through the spring until we mow it down in May. It not only helps to keep our soils healthy by adding organic matter back in, but also helps keep nutrients from leaching out of the soil and smothers weeds that would usually come up in the spring. It's a workhorse of a cover crop and can germinate in temperatures as low as the mid-30s. We've been roasting a lot of garlic lately to spread on some crusty bread topped with sautéed peppers and scallions. Enjoy your boxes this week and stay warm out there as the temperatures drop over the weekend.
FALL SHARE - WEEK 3 (Oct 3)
Buttercup Squash
Baby Salad Mix
Cherry Tomatoes
Parsley
Shallots
Red Skin Potatoes
Red Bell Pepper
Carmen Peppers (Sweet!)
Serrano Pepper (Hot!)
Red Tomatoes
This week's squash feature is buttercup. Its orange flesh has a sweet, dry taste with a mild flavor and beautiful color. They make a great roasted squash garnished with the parsley and an even better soup that would pair with a wonderful baby mix salad. We are close to the end of the tomatoes and peppers but we promise to keep them coming as long as we can. The shallots are a delicate member of the allium family (onions, garlic, etc.) that works well in place of the onions for a more refined flavor. You can try them as a quick pickle too or if you're feeling adventurous you can bread and fly them as a crunchy, sweet topping for homemade green bean casserole. The serrano is wonderfully spicy sliced very thin as a garnish for fish. We have some beautiful head lettuce coming next week along with more fall goodness to fill your boxes.
FALL SHARE - WEEK 2 (Sept. 26)
Acorn Squash
Japanese Salad Turnips
Heirloom Tomatoes
Cherry Tomatoes
Green Kale
Red Radishes
Green Onions
Poblano Peppers
Carmen Pepper (red sweet)
Escamillo Pepper (yellow sweet)
Garlic
The harbinger of fall, the first winter squash (acorn), has arrived in your box this week. We are still straddling the line of summer/fall with two types of tomatoes (heirloom and cherry) and three types of peppers. The long red pepper (called 'Carmen') and long yellow one (called 'Escamillo') are both SWEET frying peppers. Their shape makes them look hot but they isn't a drop of heat in them...and yes, some plant breeders have a sense of humor and name the varieties they release after famous operas. The dark green poblanos have a small amount of heat and a large amount of smokiness. They are best served stuffed and roasted or fried. As the garlic was being packed for the shares today we were simultaneously breaking the largest bulbs into cloves that will be planted in a month to become next year's harvest. Planting garlic is one of the last outside activities we do on the farm and is always a sign that we are close to winter. We're not there yet, but after many years of farming we can feel the closeness of winter. Hearty greens, like kale, and roots, like radishes and turnips, will continue to show up as we shift away from summer fruits to the more cold tolerant leaves and roots of the fall season. Watch for salad mix, beets, and other fall crops coming soon in your boxes and into your homes.

Welcome to the first fall share week of 2019, but don't let the calendar fool you. This box still is full of summer sunshine. Yes, the tomatoes, peppers, and beans are winding down, and the herbs are switching from warm season ones, like basil, to cool season ones, like parsley, but your boxes are still full of summer fruits for a bit longer. For those of you who have been with us through the spring and summer we are so happy to have you on board for the next six weeks. For those of you joining us for the first time we are so happy to have you be a part of Weekly Greens CSA! These next six weeks will see the fruits phase out and the greens, roots, and winter squashes come to the forefront. We can feel this change on our farms as the lists, although still long, seem manageable. This is a wonderful time of year to work outside as cool mornings with long sleeve shirts and jackets give way to warm afternoons of t-shirts. We are busy transplanting and direct seeding crops in the hoophouses for late fall and winter harvests and squeezing in the last of the outdoor plantings before putting the fields into cover crops to rest for the winter. We feel the days growing shorter, but still have work to do. We look forward to these next six weeks together and sharing all our farms have to offer.
SUMMER SHARE - WEEK 12 (Sept. 12)
Yellow Carrots
Cherry Tomatoes
Carmen Peppers
Garlic
Green Onions
Basil
Green Beans
Cooking Onions
Red Beefsteak Tomatoes
This week marks the last summer share week of 2019. We move into the six week fall share starting next week. Thank you to all of you who joined us for the summer season and thank you to all of you who are also joining us for the fall. Although it was a cooler week, a few warmer days showed us that summer is not quite ready to go quietly just yet. That means there are still green beans, tomatoes, peppers, and basil. We are also starting to get some storage crops that are fully cured like garlic and cooking onions along with some beautiful yellow carrots this week. The feeling of fall on our farms is starting to creep in. Harvests start a little later each week as our days shorten, it's darker in the morning, and we wait for the morning dew to dry off the crops before harvesting. Our summer field crops are slowing down and ripening more slowly and we have even had to close the sides on our hoop houses a few nights to keep the peppers and tomatoes a few degrees warmer. Fall crops like watermelon and black spanish radishes, storage carrots, and storage beets are putting on growth before they are harvested in four to five weeks and the potatoes are ready to come out of the ground and into storage for the winter. The lists, while still long, are getting a bit more manageable and our brains are turning to changes and improvements we can make for next season. As we roll into fall we are feeling fortunate for a bountiful summer season and support from all of you in our first season as Weekly Greens CSA. Thank you to you all!
SUMMER SHARE - WEEK 11 (Sept. 5)
Red Bell Pepper
Cherry Tomatoes
Caraflex Cabbage
Serrano Peppers (HOT!)
Green Onions
Beets with Greens
Arugula
Orange Bell Pepper
Potatoes
Red Beefsteak Tomatoes
Mizuna
Salad Turnips
This week's box is packed full of late summer sweetness and early fall green-ness! We are savoring the tomatoes while they last and the bell peppers have finally started to show their colors. The serrano peppers are here to remind us of summer's heat (even if we didn't have a lot of it this year) and we love them sliced very, very thin or finely diced on top of our eggs or adding some heat and balance to a sweet, honey vinaigrette to drizzle on mizuna or arugula. We like to roast the beets, chill, then cube them and toss with avocado and a dash of orange juice for a non-greens salad. Green onions go great with some butter on top of boiled potatoes while the salad turnips are best eaten raw. Enjoy this week's box as we round the bend towards fall but don't quite let go of the summer.

SUMMER SHARE - WEEK 10 (August 29)
Sweet Corn
Red Beefsteak Tomatoes
Sweet Red Italian Frying Peppers
Lettuce Mix
Cherry Tomatoes
White Onion
Garlic
Basil
It is beefsteak tomato season (finally!) and the plants that were slow to take off in the spring and early summer that we have been patiently waiting on are starting to hit their stride. Enjoy these ones on a BLT, as part of a Caprese salad along with this week's basil, or on a salad with your baby lettuce mix. The corn is still here to say good-bye to August and most of it is wrapping up a short 2019 season throughout mid-Michigan. Enjoy these red 'Carmen' sweet peppers fresh or sautéed with the white onion and garlic for some classic Italian flavors. We have been eating these cherry tomatoes like candy lately as we reach for a handful from our kitchen tables each time we walk past. We know this week's share has summer written all over it, but we also just seeded the first planting of spinach yesterday which means the cooler days and nights of fall are just around the corner and the shift of seasons has begun. There's plenty of summer produce goodness left but watch for fall crops like arugula and green onions to be finding their way into your kitchens soon.

Sweet Corn
Potatoes
Salad Mix
Cherry Tomatoes (not pictured, but trust us, they are beautiful!)
Green Peppers
Radishes
Walla Walla Sweet Onions
Garlic
Green Beans
We have stuffed peppers on our minds this week, along with fresh tomatoes and salad, hearty potatoes and garlic, and some crunchy radishes. Sweet corn is still eeking out some end of summer time but will say so long for the season shortly. With as wet as the spring was (which pushed back or eliminated multiple planting dates) we are so happy to be able to have it in the shares as much as we have this year as we have heard from other farmers around the state how short their season has been. Sweet onions are screaming to top your burgers (or veggie burgers) and the green beans have just kept chugging along in the dry, summer heat. Watch for sweet colored peppers soon and different types of baby salad greens coming shortly as well.
SUMMER SHARE - WEEK 8 (August 15)
Sweet Corn
Potatoes
Green Beans
Heirloom Tomatoes
Serrano Peppers (HOT!)
Green Peppers
Cucumbers
Mint
Scallions
Dill
Fennel
Sweet corn, multiple types of heirloom tomatoes (Green Zebra, Valencia, Cherokee Purple, Pink Brandywine, and Berkeley Tie-Dye), green beans, cucumbers, hot and green peppers...More summer in this week's share with just a hint of fall with the first of the potatoes of the season. Make the most of these mid-August days filled with sunshine, classic summer vegetables, and thoughts of kids, grandkids, or friend's kids heading back to school over the next few weeks. We are still holding onto summer, but can also feel a touch of fall in evenings with the windows open and early mornings with a long sleeve shirt on for the first few hours. This in-between time has us savoring these flavors, watching the peppers blush as they start to show the first signs of sweetening to their late summer red and orange, and we see some of the first of our fall seedlings of lettuce, radicchio, Swiss chard, and other fall crops starting to grow in the greenhouse.
SUMMER SHARE - WEEK 7 (August 8)
Sweet Corn!
Green Beans
Cherry Tomatoes
Red Slicer Tomato
Green Peppers
Baby Cucumbers
Italian Heirloom Zucchini
Swiss Chard
Beet Greens
Basil
Parsley
White Onion
This week's share is what summer CSAs are made of! The first sweet corn of the year, tomatoes galore, cucumbers, green beans, zucchini, basil, and more. It is the peak of summer harvests on our farms and we are spending these long days harvesting beautiful crops. Our days are starting early to beat the heat and everywhere we turn our crops are growing. It seriously seems like we can see the corn ripen, the cucumbers climbing higher on their trellises, and the tomatoes change color before our eyes. We are making sure both the crops and the farmers are getting lots of water and that the farmers take a little time to look around (which we sometimes forget to do this time of year) and remember how special it is that we get to spend our days with our hands in the soil, soaking up the sun, and putting our all into growing food.
SUMMER SHARE - WEEK 6 (August 1)
Slicer Tomato
Red Onion
Poblano Pepper (Dark Green)
Green Pepper
Baby Salad Mix
Kale
Microgreens
Romaine Lettuce
Garlic
This week's share is just asking for a BLT. You will find the first slicer tomatoes and a medium sized head of romaine lettuce plus salad mix and kale. New items also include a mild red onion called 'Red Wing' (GO WINGS!) and a poblano pepper (the dark green one). These have a small hint of spice and a wonderful smokey flavor. They can be grilled, charred, or roasted to add even more smokiness and are a great addition to salsa or white chili. You can top your breakfast eggs or lunch sandwich with the microgreens and roast off that garlic with some olive oil, salt, and pepper to spread on some crusty bread along side mixed green salad. We hope you enjoy this week as it marks the halfway point of our Days of Summer Share.
SUMMER SHARE - WEEK 5 (July 25)
Cherry Tomatoes
Green Pepper
Beets with Greens
Green Summer Crisp Lettuce
Flat-Leaf Parsley
Basil
Cucumbers
Collard Greens
The tomatoes are here! This week cherry tomatoes make their first appearance and we couldn't be happier about them. Tomatoes are one of the things that signal summer (along with sweet corn, which isn't too far away either) and with such a short season in Michigan we plan to make sure you are fully stocked this summer. We all survived the past week's heat wave (which the tomatoes loved) and are enjoying working in the cooler temperatures this week. We still have the early mornings and late evenings of summer life on a farm , but we are also able to work through the heat of the day, which was nearly impossible last week. You also have a green pepper, the first peppers we've harvested this year. Although they don't get the attention tomatoes do, they also love the heat of summer. We grow a wide range of peppers that you'll get to experience first hand over the rest of the summer shares. This week's share is rounded out with herbs, root crops, cucumbers, lettuce, and collard greens. Our farms are really cranking these days and we hope you love the range and bounty of this week's share as much as we do.
SUMMER SHARE - WEEK 4 (July 18)
Peas
Salad Mix
Fresh Garlic
Fresh Sweet Onion
Mint
Cucumbers
Zucchini
Baby Fennel
Green Curly Kale
Week 4 of the summer is bringing us HOT weather and new crops. It's been such a wild year weather-wise that peas, which we usually start harvesting the first week of June or earlier, are now ready for harvest. They don't like the heat at all so please savor them this week. The onions and garlic are both fresh (which means they haven't been cured) so store them in your refrigerator while their sisters and brothers are starting to dry down and cure on our farms for storage outside your refrigerators in upcoming weeks. We have been loving zucchini and fennel on the grill lately while enjoying sunsets and dinners with family and friends that we really try to make time for during this busy time of the farm season. We always love some curly kale, especially in a breakfast hash with a farm fresh eggs, and that mint would find a great home in a lemony, sun tea or mint julep.
SUMMER SHARE - WEEK 3 (July 11)
Cucumbers
Basil
Swiss Chard
Radicchio
Dill
Caraflex Cabbage Head
Lettuce Mix
Beet Greens
Green Onions
Parsley
In this week's share you'll find a mix of both greens and early summer herbs and fruits, along with your weekly greens. The first basil of the season is coming in and it sure made it smell like summer as we were packing shares today. Along with that you have some dill and cucumbers that would be great to put together for some refrigerator pickles or cukes and vinegar. Next to your beet greens and Swiss chard you also have a head of radicchio. This bitter green has been a challenging one for us over the years. We have always been able to get large leaves but have been trying for four years to get it to form a head. Finally! It's a beautiful combination of red, white, and green best halved then charred on the grill and eaten warm. There will be more summer fruits starting to fill your shares soon along with greens and herbs to push us into summer.
SUMMER SHARE - WEEK 2 (June 27)
Cucumbers
Zucchini
Cilantro
Collard Greens
Buttercrunch Lettuce Head
Oregano
Salad Mix
Garlic Scapes
Welcome to the first summer fruits of the year! We weren't sure if the zucchini and cucumbers were going to grow to full size for this week's distribution but they loved a couple sunny days in a row and came through for us. The zucchini is called 'Costata Romanesco' and is an Italian heirloom variety that has a similar texture but a bit nuttier flavor than a straight green zucchini. Grill it, fry it, or sauté it and taste the first rays of the summer sun. You'll also find the greens and lettuces are coming on strong with the still cool weather (despite the past two days) and your shares are filled with leafy cooking greens, baby salad mix, and some crunchy butter lettuce. Top that off with two different kinds of herbs and some garlic scapes to finish off this week's bounty.
SUMMER SHARE - WEEK 1 (June 20)
Carrots
Red Beets (with greens)
Dill
Lettuce Mix
Green Onions
Microgreens Mix
Romaine Lettuce Head
Parsley
Welcome to the first week of the summer share to our spring share holders that have been with us for the past six weeks, and welcome to the first week for our summer shareholders joining us for the first time! We have a great mix of root crops, greens, herbs, and micros this week. While it doesn't feel like summer quite yet, we are happy to provide a great mix in this week's boxes and feel fortunate to be working together across our three farms to bring you the best of what's in season (even if that feels like it's still spring!). While they are a bit off we have great cherry tomatoes starting to set fruit, even in this cold, wet weather, and some cucumbers and zucchini on the near horizon as soon as we get some sun shining down. Welcome to summer...we are ready to get rolling!
SPRING SHARE - WEEK 6 (June 13)
Carrots
Red Beets (with greens)
Mint
Cilantro
Garlic Scapes
Caraflex Cabbage
Romaine Lettuce Head
Kohlrabi
Week 6 marks the final week of our first ever spring share (and the last week you'll see kohlrabi until the fall). We have been cheering on the carrots and beets through the cool spring not knowing if they would make it to harvest before the end of spring shares. The good news is they did and we couldn't be more excited about that! Enjoy those along with other first time items of mint, personal sized cabbage heads and garlic scapes. The scapes are the immature flower stalk of hard neck garlic that we remove about a month before harvesting the bulb. It gives us a preview of the soon to come garlic flavor and also allows the plants to put more energy into producing larger bulbs. You can use all of the stalk, but not the small flower bud on the end, in any place you would use garlic.
In this last week of the spring share we wanted to send you all a big "THANK YOU!" for believing in and supporting Weekly Greens CSA. We are overwhelmed and incredibly happy to share that every person or family that had a spring share will be joining us for a summer share as well. Thank you so much and we can't wait to share all the goodness we have in store for you.
SPRING SHARE - WEEK 5 (June 6)
Lettuce Mix
Lovage
Cucumber
Green Onions
Sunflower Microgreens
Red Oakleaf Lettuce Head
Collard Green and Kale Bunch
Kohlrabi
Arugula
It's June...plus we finally had some sunshine and warm weather which means we have all been busy planting, cultivating, seeding, and still dodging the rain showers! This week we have an uncommon herb in the shares called Lovage. It can be used raw or cooked but we like to chop it and add it to salads for a celery-like taste. Green onions mean that fresh onions will start to bulb up soon and will find their way into your summer shares in late July. We have white, walla walla, red, and yellow onions all happily growing and looking forward to finding their way to you. You'll also find a wine-red head of oakleaf lettuce and the FIRST CUCUMBER of the year. It may be small, but it is mightly! These are the very first of the very first summer fruits we are harvesting. We've have watched these grow from tiny, little, yellow flowers and are so excited to share these special first summer treats with you. There will be plenty more and larger ones on the way, but in the meantime enjoy this first taste of summer sliced with a little salt.
SPRING SHARE - WEEK 4 (MAY 29)
Salad Mix
Beet Greens
Romaine Lettuce Head
Kohlrabi
Chives (with flowers)
Oregano
Buttercrunch Lettuce Head
Collard Greens
Microgreens
We absolutely love this time of the year as we continue to harvest new crops every week. First time items in the Week 4 share include beet greens (try them fresh or raw), romaine lettuce (it's not quite BLT time yet), kohlrabi (try it diced with a cream/bechamel sauce), chives with flowers (think vinaigrette for that buttercrunch or salad mix), and oregano (compound butter, anyone?). We are riding into June on the back of the first cucumber and zucchini flowers as those tasty treats start to lean into the coming summer.
SPRING SHARE - WEEK 3 (MAY 23)
Buttercrunch Head Lettuce
Collard Greens
Frilly Red Mustard
Spinach
Tokyo Bekana Chinese Cabbage
Green Garlic
Cilantro
Microgreens
For week 3 of the Spring CSA we have our first head lettuce and some gorgeous collard greens! It takes a few more weeks for these lettuces to form a head than it does for the baby greens to get to harvest size and more time for the leaves of the collards to get big enough to cook with too. This green buttercrunch is an absolute favorite and is perfect in both a salad (with just a nice pinch of large grained salt and some good olive oil) or on a sandwich. You can also use it to make lettuce wraps by just peeling off the leaves right at the base and storing any of the unused head in a sealed container in the fridge. Heading crops and large leaf greens signal that other crops are just around the corner. We have some special ones that are growing beautifully, even in the cool, cloudy weather we've been having, that will find their way into your shares soon!
